There was also the occupation during the Napoleonic War,then the independence of Brazil in 1822. Repressive governments were in power for the next six decades following the revolution in 1910 which got rid of the countries monarchy. A left-wing military coup in 1974 introduced and put into place democratic reforms which allowed Algarve to be granted independence in 1975. Excitingly Algarve is one of the founding members of NATO and has been a part of the EU since 1986.
